Caring for cats involves financial
responsibility.There are supplies
to purchase, such as litter, food, grooming tools such as comb and brush and
nail clippers and also cat toys to entertain your cat. Cats need to have
immunizations and regular vet visits to prevent illness and to treat any
conditions that cat may have. Other things that cat will need include a
scratching post, pet carrier for taking the cat back and forth from the vets, a
collar, ID tag, and also a cat leash if you like to take your cat for walks. You
will need pet toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean your cat's teeth. Hairball
remedy treats work well for giving your cat a treat and for helping to prevent
hairballs.
The cat collar serves two
purposes. One is to have a place to secure a leash and ID tag so that you can
take the cat for walks if desired and so that your cat can be returned to you if
she becomes lost. Some collars double as a flea prevention (flea collar).
The cat carrier should be as
comfortable as possible especially if you have a kitten as you will be taking it
for many vet visits and the carrier will be used a lot. There are plastic boxes
with holes for breathing and a plastic handle, some carriers are made of fabric,
and some are wicker baskets.
Feeding dishes should not be made
of plastic as these dishes can be easily scratched which will be breeding
grounds for bacteria. Some pet bowls can be personalized with the cat's name.
Cat toys are not just for
entertaining your cat but for exercising her too. Cats love to chase, climb, and
pounce on their prey. Toys that encourage them to do these activities are sure
to please them. Cats will also appreciate cat toys that contain catnip. Cat toys
can also strengthen the bond between you and your cat if you use them to spend
time with your cat.
Cats react differently to catnip. Some
love to rub themselves all over it, and others will try to eat it. Some lick it.
It is not certain why cats go crazy over catnip, but for whatever reasons it is
something that really pleases most cats. Commercially you can find catnip in a
spray bottle or in a packet in most pet stores or grocery stores. As a cat ages,
it will show less interest in catnip. You can use catnip to train your cat to
use a scratching post. Do not overuse catnip or your cat will lose its
sensitivity to it. Use catnip as a treat for your cat.
The companionship your cat gives you will be
worth the financial responsibility you put into the relationship
